
is a small coast town located at the entrance to Makarska Riviera. It consists of two settlements : Brela and Gornja Brela (Upper Brela). Gornja Brela is a small village on the slopes of mountain Biokovo and is located within the Nature Park Biokovo. It is separated from Brela by a mountain pass Dubci which shows that nature is the best artist of all. This is the place where mountain Biokovo kisses the sea and this scenery announces miles and miles of natural beauty along the entire Makarska Riviera.In the past, before the development of tourism, people in Brela were mostly engaged in farming and fishing. In addition to olive cultivation, typical of Makarska Riviera, in Brela people cultivated 'marasca', a sour cherry variety which has become a symbol and a synonym of the place.The devenlopment of tourism initiated the development of Brela, and it has become the traditional tourist resort, visited mostly by German tourists. One can find peace and refreshment on its numerous beaches and one of them, by the name of "Dugi rat" (Punta Rata), was listed among the ten most beautiful beaches in the world by the Forbes magazine, and was voted the most beautiful in Europe. However, Brela is still most famous fot its stone "Brela", an imperative we find in every picture and postcard of this beautiful small seaside town.
